Reposted from my original post in honor of Global Movie Day today, February 11th
A while ago I started a list of actors and actresses whose names are associated with classic movies, iconic movies, that no matter what will always be on the list of movies to watch.
Then shortly after I learned that Doris Day had passed away, a woman who starred in many films, and is known for her amazing voice and her animal welfare activism.
I remember watching Calamity Jane when I was about 8 at my grandmas house, and I loved it. Ive seen a handful of her movies, I enjoy watching them, they are fun. I enjoy watching movies with actors and actresses such as Doris Day, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Danny Kaye and Howard Keel. Some of my favorite go to movies are from the 50’s, but there is a long list of movies I still want to see.
I started makings lists of movies, by actor/actress and plan to check them off as I watch them, as well as make a list of 100 classic movies to see.
There are of course movies I’ve seen that I’ll probably add to the list of personal favorites or the list of movies I would recommend, I already have a list for a friend 🙂 Three sites that have good lists of top movies to see are imdb list, Afi list, and Turner Classic Movies
The actors and actresses on my list so far are;
Doris Day
Cary Grant
Audry Hepburn
Jack Lemon
Marilyn Monroe
Grace Kelly
Danny Kaye
I have started watching some of the movies, checking them off in my book.
I have lists in a separate notebook, and am using IMDB to make my lists.
The first I found on Amazon Prime Video was It Happened to Jane with Doris Day, and have watched To Catch a Thief and Some Like it Hot since then. I am enjoying watching movies that have a good story, with no flashy effects, and good humor.
A few years ago my dad wrote a song about Doris Day, coincidentally I also wrote a poem for my creative writing class about Doris Day about the same time.
Here is my attempt at a Ballad Poem
Ballad for Doris Day
A broken leg crushed ballet dreams
New goals came with her voice.
This singer and dancer became
Hollywood’s star of choice.
Starting with love on the high seas
She rode into our hearts
With buckskins on, rifle in hand
Six shooters on her hips.
She became and on screen starlette
And a musical hit.
A star on Hollywoods Boulevard
With her name in lights.
That was the start of a life long
Carreer from whip crackaway
Through Pillow Talk and Touch of Mink
For Dear Doris Day.
So in memory of Doris Day I challenge each of you to watch one or more of her movies, learn a bit about a woman who had a large place in movies during the 50’s and 60’s and who starred in some of my favorites. A woman who lives on in memory and in film, and who will be remembered for the changes she made for Animal Welfare. A site that gives a good biography is https://www.dorisday.com/
